Contemporary Woodcut Workshops

This short course aims to introduce you to the beautiful medium of printing with woodcut, allowing you to get to grips with the basics of this age old printmaking technique. Whether a total beginner or an experienced printmaker, this course will give you an insight into all the possibilities wood has to offer as a printing medium and how it can be used with in contemporary art practise today.

Spread over five sessions, you will be guided through the different steps: translating the image to the block, carving, inking and printing. Focusing on the creative possibilities and becoming familiar with the particular qualities that wood block printing allows, you will be encouraged to find and develop your own expression.

We will look at how to translate your images onto the wood block, exploring graphic language, ways of carving and the expressive use of wood grain. We will also be introducing colour into our prints, experimenting with inking methods, and working towards a final image. As a final piece, you will be making a large-scale woodcut and printing a small edition to take home with you.
