Spanish playing Cards

Early Spanish cards, Valencia, 1778.

The earliest tarot cards where italian, when around 1450 allegorical illustrations where added to the usual four decks of italian playing cards. These were still used for games, and it was not until the 18th century that they were used for divination purposes. This explains the similarity between tarot cards and playing cards, as is visually clear in spanish playing cards.
