Julia R. Gallego was artist in residence at Inky Cuttlefish Studios, London, from February until September 2010.
Her residency was combined with an internship, gaining work experience helping to run the studio, and access to the printmaking facilities to create her own work to be displayed in a solo exhibition.
Her work at Inky focused on issues of gender and sexuality, looking at the body with a double gaze, showing the intersection of culture and science in the construction of masculinity and femininity. She drew images from anatomical illustrations of reproductive organs and from myths. Two recurrent figures in her collographs and prints are Adam and Eve. Living and printing in Walthamstow, William Morris has influenced some of her work.
During her internship she covered open access and assisted users of the printmaking facilities, refurbished the gallery space, hanged exhibitions, designed publicity material, delivered workshops and guided visits to the William Morris Gallery, and has assisted in general in all aspects of running the studio.
Her residency culminated in a group exhibition at the William Morris Gallery.
